Where do you get all of your plates is maybe the most asked question. At any given time, Richardson likes to keep between 18,000-20,000 license plates on hand (yes, the comma and zeros are in the correct spot). It becomes more precarious finding plates and Richardson likes to use plates that are 1970's and older. Domestically there is a mix of professional "pickers" (like those guys from American Pickers tv show) and license plate collectors. Internationally Cody and Ann travel to these countries and use a diverse network of people and scenarios to sneak the plates out. Every country is a bit different depending on their laws, so it is a true adventure tracking these down
"People need art in their homes. They don't need Bed, Bath, and Beyond dentist office art. They need weird stuff." - Ezra Croft (art show producer).
Sometimes it can be challenging to conceptualize mixed-media artwork in their homes. Here are some ways patron's have displayed their pieces. Artwork can be displayed inside or outside as we use a high-grade wood as a base with an exterior paint applied on both sides, have license plates hand-wrapped around the edges, and finally coated with a clear industrial urethane to protect against harsh weather and yellowing. Artwork comes ready to hand with durable fasteners spaced 16" apart.
Your artwork is a labor of love. Not only are authentic license plates used, but pieces are drawn out onto wood, hand-cut with a jigsaw, painted on both sides with exterior paint and clearcoat, hand-cut and wrapped with tinsnips, chiseled and hammered into place, and packaged snuggly for shipping. The process takes approximately 3-4 weeks for production of standard pieces (those found online), while new custom designs and framing typically take 4-6 weeks.
Depending on the size, intricacy, and rarity of license plates will determine the price point. Some states offer 'modern' options (post 1970s) where 'antique' options (pre 1970s) are used which will vary in price points.
These are personal pieces, so if you are unsure about what option to gift there is always the option of a gift card. Cody will personally work with individuals to create a memorable piece using plates, years, or even colors of their choice. A special note on the backside of the artwork can be added upon request.

Unlike a painting that can easily have prints reproduced, with artwork by Cody Richardson everything is a pure original. Richardson was the first in the industry to produce this license plate artwork. His authentic artwork can only be purchased through this website or an exclusive dealer. Each piece will come signed, numbered, and include a certificate of authenticity. Knock-offs are easy to spot by the quality and authenticity of license plates, craftsmanship, and materials used.
